Houston’s iconic Astrodome has reached a major milestone. The National Park Service has determined the Dome is eligible for consideration as a National Historic Landmark.

If officially designated, it would join an exclusive group of fewer than 3,000 sites across the country recognized for their impact on American history and innovation.

Opened in 1965, the Astrodome was the world’s first domed, air-conditioned stadium—earning its legendary nickname, the “Eighth Wonder of the World.”

It’s important to note that this is only a step in the process. Final designation as a National Historic Landmark requires approval from the Secretary of the Interior.
