Luna’s Mexican Restaurant Celebrates 40 Years of Family, Food, and Community

When Luna’s Mexican Restaurant opened in 1986 in Baytown, the vision was simple: serve high quality, made from scratch Tex-Mex food with fresh ingredients, generous portions, and genuine Mexican hospitality. What began as a single restaurant quickly became a community gathering place and over the next four decades, Luna’s grew alongside the families it served.

The original location, a 4,500 square foot space in the old Kroger shopping center, was almost immediately too small. With long wait times and growing demand, the restaurant expanded within its first year. That early support from the community helped shape Luna’s future and confirmed that this was a concept people were looking for.

Over the years, Luna’s expanded to four locations serving Baytown, League City, Texas City, and Friendswood. Despite the growth, the business has remained family owned and hands on, with owners and leadership still involved in daily operations, tasting food, working with staff, and connecting with guests.

While the original menu focused on Tex-Mex, Luna’s later introduced authentic dishes inspired by Mexico City and other regions of Mexico, always keeping recipes made from scratch with fresh, high quality ingredients.

Throughout the years, Luna’s has become more than a restaurant to many families in the Southeast Houston area. Guests often share stories of celebrating birthdays there as children and now bringing their own kids, or stopping in every time they return to town because Luna’s feels like home. The restaurant has also supported the community during difficult times, providing meals to electrical crews after hurricanes, food for shelters during freezes, and meals for essential workers during COVID.

Like many family-owned restaurants, Luna’s has had to adapt to rising costs, increased competition, and industry changes. During COVID, the restaurant quickly introduced delivery for food and margaritas and continues to evolve today through rebranding, updated menus, and new promotions, while staying committed to scratch cooking, generous portions, and hospitality.

Now celebrating 40 years, Luna’s is marking the milestone with anniversary promotions, open house events, and a week celebration from April 13–19, including a raffle for an exclusive dinner with the Luna’s family.

For the family behind Luna’s, the anniversary is about more than the number of years, it’s about the people who made it possible. “Luna’s was built by the community,” the family says. “We are grateful for every family, every employee, and every guest who has been part of our story. We are proud to still be here, serving the same community that supported us from the very beginning.”
